If It’s Cluttering Your Mind, Write It Down
and other helpful habits for imperfect people (like me).
Let me start by saying: I’m not in a position to tell you what to do with your life when mine is far from perfect. However, maybe that’s also the reason I can write this.
My life may be messy and imperfect, but there are tiny things I do that help me cope with life, enjoy it, and even have some clarity now and then. And I think that, sometimes, that’s the best we can hope for.
1. Enjoy your food without your phone
My girlfriend laughs at me when we eat because I always glance at my food first before I take a bite. But if you look at your food — the layers of creamy peanut butter and banana or a juicy salad with a strong lemon scent — you’ll find it tastes better than if you’d only been paying half attention.
My advice is: put your phone down. Register every taste, texture, and scent. It’s a simple experience, but a good one.
2. Go for walks
The ability to go on walks is a luxury. Truthfully. Back in my neighborhood in San Diego, I didn’t go for walks, even though I desperately wanted to. Put aside the safety issues, my block wasn’t nice. Or pretty. I also didn’t have a car I could take…
