I was trying to write an article this morning, but after an hour, I’d only produced five-hundred words. (Which usually takes me about twenty to thirty minutes.)

I was stressed. The words weren’t flowing. I had other tasks to work on.

Eventually, I called it quits and decided to text a friend. This friend and I started talking about the tv show DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Let me tell you something about this show: It’s weird.

Sometimes, it can be a little bad, but even when it’s bad, it’s good. It’s epic. It’s easily one of the most fun shows I’ve ever watched.

How can something be bad and good at the same time? The show knows it’s cheesy and weird. The creators embrace the aspects that make it unique and do it on purpose.

Sure, both the on- and off-screen crew take their job seriously and work hard. But who said you couldn’t have a balance of fun and serious?

The conversation made me realize why I couldn’t finish my article this morning. I was taking it way too seriously.

I was trying too hard to come off as deep. All I managed to do was come off as a pretentious dick.

The process of writing that article was so dull that even I decided I didn’t want to read the piece. Now I’m writing this one.

Art is real, real is you

There’s a reason I was trying too hard while writing that article.

I’ve recently become obsessed with the idea of creating “real art.” As in, not writing recycled material or too many listicles that don’t require much work.

When you think of real art, you imagine some creep who wears all black, has lots of tattoos, and sounds like a dickwad. This person is filled with pain and sadness, but they create real art.

They’re deep thinkers. If you want to be a real artist, you too, have to get deep.

Or so I thought.

I realized: art is real, and real is you.

The only thing that makes art unique is the creator. And it’s not just about the final…
