The eyes staring back at me were full-of-shock wide, and I laughed a little awkwardly. “That’s a lot,” my sister told me.

I’d just finished telling her about my worries for the next five years. No joke: I’d outlined how I envisioned my life and all the ways I feared it wouldn’t turn out as I wished.

As an overthinker and over-worrier, I can pick out a concern about tomorrow and paint a picture of how it’ll affect my life six months or five years down the line. One domino and a flick of my finger.

“I know it’s a lot,” I said.

“You can’t control that much,” she replied. “And you’re talking about years from now. You can’t possibly know what’s going to happen because anything can happen. You have to take it one step at a time. Just focus on your first goal.”
