I turn twenty-four in about a month, but this morning I woke up feeling the way I used to when I was eighteen.

At eighteen, my chest felt heavy with a longing for something I couldn’t pin. It took me an hour to get out of bed. My future was an abyss. The present wasn’t a moment to seep in but one to escape.

That happens sometimes. You wake up and realize your life is going backward.

I turn twenty-four in about a month. This is not how my life was supposed to look.

Supposed to.

The Bonnie and Clyde of words. An evil pair. Dangerous.

Supposed to is the reason we wake up and question our lives. Because eighteen-year-old me assumed that twenty-four-year-old me would be making a decent amount of money — at least enough to pay my own rent. She assumed that I’d be killing it as an online writer.

But no matter how much we’ve planned our lives, Supposed to will always turn to face us and blow a raspberry.

When you wake up and realize your life is nothing like the direction you thought it was headed in, you can only do two things:
